【Synopsis】 Professor Ferguson plans to cross Africa in a balloon, making it a milestone in aviation history. He claims that it can serve as evidence of his private property of invention over the uncharted territories of West Africa, and everyone embarks on a thrilling journey! 【Novel】 "Five Weeks in a Balloon" is the first science fiction novel by author Jules Verne, which tells the story of the early 19th century when many explorers, geographers, and travelers had conducted arduous explorations of Africa, leaving behind precious data and maps, but still failed to ascertain the region between longitudes 14° and 33° in Africa; at this time, British traveler Samuel Ferguson decides to verify the findings of previous explorers and investigate this region of Africa. Despite skepticism from everyone, he sets off with his friend Kennedy and his servant Joe from Zanzibar in Africa, aboard his self-designed hot air balloon, facing countless hardships to the north, ultimately reaching the French territory along the Senegal River, thus completing the unfinished work of his predecessors and dispelling everyone's doubts and conjectures. The book vividly and delicately describes the landscapes of the African continent, covering everything from mountains and seas, marshy lowlands, deserts, rivers, to volcanic and tropical terrains; the tropical plants such as baobabs, fig trees, acacia trees, and tamarind trees are all incredibly diverse; the tropical animals such as elephants, hippos, crocodiles, vultures, leopards, and hyenas are all present, along with thrilling scenes of outsmarting wild men and monkeys, all of which inevitably make one long to embark on an adventure in Africa. The hot air balloon is their mode of transportation, which, even for today's Chinese readers, is a relatively unfamiliar concept, while the book's protagonist had already thought of using it as an exploration tool in the first half of the 19th century. Even more interestingly, the author goes into detail explaining the complex structure of the balloon through the protagonist, showcasing the author's vast knowledge and extremely rich imagination. The novel's novelty in transportation combined with beautiful scenery adds to its intrigue. The book also reflects the friendship and care between people: the three travelers once risked their lives to rescue a French missionary; when the balloon was about to crash into Lake Chad, Joe selflessly jumped into the lake to save his two companions' lives; and when Joe was escaping in the Sahara Desert, Kennedy's shot also rescued Joe from a savage tribe. This spirit of mutual love and assistance is something that we should cherish and promote in today's expressive era.
