This is the masterpiece of Jiří Menzel from 1985, which not only brought him Oscar recognition nearly twenty years later but also brought the long-absent Czech cinema back into the international spotlight. The protagonist is a mentally challenged orphan who usually works as an assistant to a farm driver. Although he causes numerous humorous situations, the two share a father-son bond until a significant mistake makes the driver the laughingstock of the village, prompting him to end their working relationship in anger. The kind-hearted simpleton decides to bid farewell to his home and seeks new work at a coal company in Prague. Will he be able to adapt to the completely different urban life? Can he let go of this peculiar yet lovable little village? Menzel's lively and diverse sketches of the small town are delicate and moving. IMDB Rating: 8.0
