On a winter night, lawyer Mitchell (Ian Holm) receives a call from his drug-addicted daughter Zoe while washing his car at a car wash, revealing the philosophical conflicts between them. Frustrated, Mitchell faces the embarrassing situation of a car door that won't open, ultimately storming off and abandoning the vehicle. Earlier, on a plane, Mitchell had an encounter with his daughter's former friend, Alison, and recounted the reasons for the breakdown of his relationship with his daughter...
Mitchell witnesses a car accident in the small town where a school bus carrying children flips into a lake while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle, resulting in many families losing their own flesh and blood. During his visits, Mitchell encounters various families, some with distorted father-daughter relationships, others suffering from alcoholism and violence, and some plagued by illness. To help them claim compensation from the government, the lawyer embarks on a rocky path of altruism...
