HBO's historical miniseries John Adams is based on the life of America's second president, John Adams, and early American history. Starring Paul Giamatti, it features a strong cast. Given that John Adams served during the Anglo-American War, many British actors joined the production, and numerous costumes and props were supported by the BBC, making the visuals comparable to a grand Roman production. John Adams was a member of the drafting committee for the Declaration of Independence formed by Thomas Jefferson, served as the first vice president of the United States, and was later elected president (1797-1801). He was regarded as "the giant of American independence." Due to his short and stocky build, he was nicknamed "Mr. Puff." During his time in office, he had no significant achievements in domestic or foreign policy and was defeated by Thomas Jefferson in the presidential election of 1800. He and Jefferson both died on the 50th anniversary of American independence—July 4, 1826. His son, John Quincy Adams, was the sixth president of the United States. This seven-part series, "John Adams," produced by HBO, is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller of the same name, which is also one of the most popular biographies in American history. The series portrays the dramatic life of John Adams (especially in terms of its significance to Americans), particularly his contributions to the founding principles and societal foundation of the United States. The so-called principles of "freedom," "democracy," and "human rights" that the United States upholds all originated during John Adams' presidency. In addition, the series also focuses on the love story between John Adams and his wife, Abigail. Abigail was not only John Adams' lover but also his steadfast political ally and the backbone of the Adams family. Their love was once deemed by Americans as "one of the most touching love stories in American history." The series stars Oscar-winning actors Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, directed by the renowned Tom Hooper, with Tom Hanks serving as an executive producer. The screenwriter, Kirk Ellis, has previously written for "Into the West," making him adept at adapting historical subjects.
