This film is based on true events, with Nicolas Cage portraying Colonel Charles Butler McVay III. The ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine's torpedo in July 1945 in the South Pacific, carrying two atomic bombs. Approximately 300 of the ship's 1,196 crew members went down with it, while the rest faced sun exposure, dehydration, saltwater exposure, and shark attacks while awaiting rescue. Only 317 were saved, and McVay was court-martialed, only to be vindicated half a century later.
