On a cold night in March, Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache) crashes his car and kills a boy. He faces a prison sentence of 3 to 15 years. He is a wealthy youth, and his mother Cornelia (Luminița Gheorghiu), in her sixties, is a successful architect belonging to the upper class of Romania. Her bookshelf is filled with unread novels by Herta Müller, and she enjoys flaunting a wallet stuffed with various credit cards. She uses all her power to exonerate her spoiled son. She hopes to bribe witnesses to change their testimonies, even trying to buy off the parents of the deceased child.
