In a quiet little town in Japan during the 1950s, dyer Tomoko Aizawa (played by Mitsushima Shinnosuke) lives her days with her mentor, friend, and lover, writer Shingo Kosugi (played by Kawai Kobayashi). As the New Year approaches, Tomoko falls ill due to the cold. The kind-hearted but hesitant Shingo ultimately does not stay to take care of her, hurrying back home to spend the New Year's Eve with his wife and daughter. A sense of melancholy lingers in her heart, but a phone call seems to relieve Tomoko's loneliness. On the other end of the line is Ryota Kinoshita (played by Masaki Ayano), the young man who once led Tomoko to abandon her husband and daughter to elope with him. Their past is not over, and old feelings continue. From then on, whenever Shingo returns home, Tomoko indulges in her affair with Ryota. This is a dangerous game, where neither side wants to lose, and both cannot afford to. Either they will perish together, or one will withdraw...This film is adapted from the autobiographical novel of the same name by the famous Japanese Buddhist nun Jakucho Setouchi (born Harumi Setouchi).
