The film tells the story of Southern farmer Bendren, who, in order to honor a promise to his wife, leads his family on a "harrowing journey" to bring her body back home for burial. The ten-day trip is fraught with disasters: floodwaters almost wash away the coffin, then the mule pulling the cart drowns, and a fire incinerates the body. As a result, the eldest son loses a foot, the second son goes mad, the third son loses his beloved horse, the daughter suffers a botched abortion and is instead violated by a pharmacy clerk, the youngest son does not get the little train he longs for, while Bendren gets dentures and marries a new wife.
