Mark O'Brien (played by John Hawkes) contracted polio in his childhood. The aftereffects of the disease left him unable to stand and caused him severe respiratory difficulties. Although he has become a successful poet and journalist in his thirties, as a man, he has never experienced sex. After repeatedly seeking guidance from a pastor friend, he resolutely decides to achieve this desire by hiring a professional. Thus, Cheryl (played by Helen Hunt) enters Mark's life. Initially, Cheryl feels at a loss regarding Mark's unique situation. However, gradually, the two not only transition from a doctor-patient relationship to friends, but Cheryl also gives Mark the courage to pursue happiness and love, allowing him to take the first step toward finding love. This film is based on a true story. Helen Hunt, who plays Cheryl, received multiple nominations, including Best Supporting Actress at the 85th Academy Awards.
