The HBO television movie "Behind the Candelabra" was nominated for the main competition section of the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The film is based on a celebrity biography, featuring the protagonist Liberace (played by Michael Douglas), a world-renowned piano artist in Hollywood during the 1950s to 1970s. Not only was he the highest-paid performer in the world, but he also earned the title "King of Bling" for his extravagant performances. He never admitted to being gay and had fought several defamation lawsuits over it, but in his later years, he was forced to go to court with his 22-year-old male assistant and bodyguard Scott (played by Matt Damon). The latter claimed they had a five-year secret relationship and demanded exorbitant alimony, which caused a shockwave in the American entertainment industry. The two eventually chose to settle out of court, and the following year, Liberace died from complications related to AIDS. The movie begins with the meeting of Scott and Liberace. Upon first meeting, Scott is captivated by Liberace's extraordinary piano performance, and Liberace's teasing remark, "This must be destiny," quickly seals their relationship. When they do not have to face the public, they live like an ordinary couple, enjoying a lavish fairytale life. However, while Scott gains the love and material security that women desire, he is doomed to never receive a legal recognition of their relationship. This regret is not only due to societal prejudice of the times but also Liberace's selfishness and obstinacy. Ultimately, the two part ways, and the secret underground life of a superstar turns into a public spectacle resembling a grand soap opera, resulting in a heartfelt love losing out to tightly closed closet doors...
