Mike (River Phoenix) and Scott (Keanu Reeves) are both male prostitutes fallen onto the streets, yet due to their vastly different family backgrounds, they do not share an unspoken understanding as one might assume. Mike, who often faints, is haunted by fragmented memories of his childhood, and the poetic countryside of Idaho frequently appears in his dreams. He desperately wants to find his long-lost mother and sees Scott as a confidant and lover. Scott, the son of the mayor of Portland, has "chosen to fall" solely to experience the pleasures of a reckless youth. He knows all too well that, although he accompanies Mike from Portland to Seattle and from Idaho to Italy, Mike cannot be his ultimate warm refuge; what he can return to is power, wealth, and women.
