The U.S. presidential election is reaching a fever pitch, with both candidates having previously received an equal number of votes. With only a week left until the Ohio primary, both candidates see this state as a crucial battleground and begin their open and covert struggles. One of the candidates, Morris (played by George Clooney), has his right-hand man Stephen (played by Ryan Gosling), a talented young strategist, who is approached by the head of the rival candidate's campaign, Tom Duffy (played by Paul Giamatti). However, Stephen remains loyal to Morris and is not swayed. On the other hand, Stephen finds himself deeply attracted to a new intern, Molly (played by Evan Rachel Wood), and the two quickly develop a passionate relationship. Surprisingly, journalist Ida (played by Marisa Tomei) from The Times learns of Stephen's meeting with Tom and threatens him to reveal insider information about the campaign.
