In order to save their ratings, a television station has planned a variety show called "Prize Adventure," where the grand prize for the winner is up to $2 million, and contestants might have to pay with their lives. François (played by Michel Piccoli) is an unemployed young man who walks the fine line of poverty every day. Finally, he can no longer endure his meager existence. Despite strong opposition from his girlfriend Lasa (played by Marie-France Pisier) regarding this decision, François signs up for the Prize Adventure. François is lucky enough to advance from the preliminary round, entering the final showdown as an "escapee."
