Dick (Jim Carrey) is a small employee in a big company who finally gets his break when he is promoted to vice president by the CEO, Jack. Enjoying his newfound success, Dick revels in life while his wife, Jane (Tea Leoni), quits her job to become a full-time homemaker. However, Dick soon discovers he is merely a scapegoat for the company, as financial scandals erupt and Jack absconds with a fortune. Dick’s life takes a nosedive when all his savings were invested in company stock, leaving him with nothing. Forced to adapt, he and Jane resort to becoming "thelives of crime." They sometimes rob coffee shops for two cups of coffee and snacks; at night, Dick sneaks into neighbors' yards to steal small patches of grass to lay in their own yard.
