Jack (Cole Hauser) and Molly (Kate Levering) are an ordinary couple living a peaceful and serene life with their adopted son, Joey (Maxwell Perry Cotton). Although Joey is not their biological child, Molly and Jack have long considered him their own. One day, a sudden phone call shatters their idyllic life. Joey's biological father, Rip (Barry Pepper), recently released from prison, and his wife Wendy (Mira Sorvino) make a reckless decision to take Joey away from Molly and Jack to establish their new family.
