T.J. (Devin Brochu) is a 13-year-old boy who has just lost his mother in a car accident. As his father cannot cope with the loss and starts using drugs all day, he has to live with his grandmother. Just when T.J. is at his lowest, a quirky guy bursts into his grandmother's old house. He has greasy long hair, is covered in tattoos, is eccentric, and hates society; he calls himself Heather (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Nearby grocery store clerk Nicole (Natalie Portman) often shows concern for T.J., leading him to develop ambiguous feelings for her, while Nicole's relationship with Heather also develops. An ordinary girl, two men each carrying their inner pain, their lives are being changed by one another.
