In 1982, a three-person Norwegian expedition team in Antarctica unexpectedly discovers a strange ship from one million years ago and finds a mysterious creature frozen in the ice nearby. The talented American paleontologist Kate Lloyd (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is invited by Dr. Sandor Halvorson (played by Ulrich Thomsen) to join a group of researchers heading to Antarctica. After careful study, they realize that this is a creature never seen before on Earth. Just as the scientists celebrate this great discovery with song and dance, the mysterious creature quietly thaws and launches a brutal attack on humanity. After a fierce struggle, the monster ultimately meets its end in flames. However, the misfortune does not end there; after observing the monster's cells, Kate senses that a disaster is approaching all of humanity...
