Zatōichi, who set out on a journey to watch the first sunrise over Mount Fuji, inflicted severe injuries on five yakuza who attacked him on the way with a momentary display of skill. Once they recovered from their injuries, the five pursued Zatōichi. At that time, Zatōichi was enjoying a boat trip to Enoshima, but when he discovered that gambling was taking place on the ship, he turned the tables and managed to win a large sum of money through his own tricks. There, he came to know Jūmonji, a roguish ronin who loved shogi. Upon arriving at Enoshima, Zatōichi was summoned by the leader of the cheaters, Ejimaya, who surrounded him with drawn swords, but thanks to Zatōichi's skilled quick moves, Ejimaya and his men retreated. However, during this uproar, the daughter of a street performer named O-Tane, named Miki, was injured. Her wound worsened and developed into tetanus. Feeling responsible, Zatōichi used his unswerving talent, inherited from Jūmonji, to gather money to buy a special antidote for tetanus, a rare medicinal herb from the Southern Barbarians. With the herb Zatōichi provided, Miki's wound completely healed. However, while visiting Hakone for a hot spring cure with Miki, Zatōichi was introduced to the sick young samurai Tomonoshin and his sister Kume, as well as their companion Rokuhira. Tomonoshin and his party were wandering in search of their father's nemesis. But one night, Rokuhira, the only person who knew the face of their enemy, was killed by a line resembling fishing thread. The next morning, Zatōichi found a float, favored by Jūmonji, drifting in Benten Pond, where Rokuhira had been murdered. Doubts about Jūmonji began to spread in Zatōichi's mind. Perhaps sensing this, Jūmonji also started to exude a murderous aura towards Zatōichi. Furthermore, from Tomonoshin's testimony, Zatōichi learned that the enemy was fond of shogi and had a peculiar habit of snapping his fingers at the peak of his game. There was no doubt—this was indeed the same habit Jūmonji exhibited when playing shogi with Zatōichi. The following day, Zatōichi and Jūmonji, accompanied by the healed Miki and O-Tane, left their lodgings. In the winding mountains of Hakone, the two walked while mentally playing shogi, each waiting for the right moment to confront the other. In an instant, both of their swords clashed. However, it was Jūmonji who fell. After defeating the pursuing five with a quick draw, Zatōichi walked away alone into the mountain path, leaving behind the voice of Miki calling out to him affectionately.
