Shot by a gunman, Zatoichi sets out on a journey to find an unknown benefactor who saved him and even covered his medical expenses, starting from the outskirts of the Kōshū post town where the ambitious yakuza Seirōki resides. In Kashizawa, there is a rivalry between Bun-kyū from Tsuzuki and Angorō from Takeya. This year, Bun-kyū aimed to bring joy to the local people by inviting the Edo fireworks master Kyūbei to set off fireworks on the riverbank, sending his niece Okuni to fetch him; it was this Okuni who saved Zatōichi. Upon learning this in Kashizawa, Zatōichi expressed his deep gratitude towards Okuni and decided to stay at Bun-kyū's house as a humble masseur. The notorious Angorō, known as Kitsu-yasu, used his sister Osen's position as the magistrate's wife to target Bun-kyū's territory, constantly creating trouble for him. However, the gentle Bun-kyū did not engage with Angorō and calmed his hot-headed followers. Meanwhile, Seirōki returned to Bun-kyū's house. Seirōki, who had caused much trouble for his family by running away, was shocked to see Zatōichi, whom he sought to defeat to prove himself among the world of travelers. Yet, the blind Zatōichi had no way of knowing that Seirōki was the one who had shot him. Seirōki fell into Kitsu-yasu's trap and was captured. In the tense standoff of whether to surrender the territory or spare Seirōki's life, Zatōichi secretly infiltrated Kitsu-yasu's home and successfully rescued Seirōki. Realizing that the masseur who swept Seirōki away was the infamous Zatōichi, Kitsu-yasu sought a request from the magistrate for Zatōichi's capture. Bun-kyū, aware of the danger, facilitated Zatōichi's early departure without revealing the circumstances. As soon as Zatōichi, the obstacle, was gone, Kitsu-yasu's family, led by the bodyguard Tengen, stormed Bun-kyū's residence. Caught off guard, both Seirōki and Bun-kyū fell helplessly. However, what appeared like a gust of wind in Kitsu-yasu's celebratory household was the furious figure of Zatōichi.
