A masterpiece by Kurosawa produced between the defeats of war, it was shelved due to censorship by the occupying forces and was first screened in 1952 after the signing of the peace treaty. Based on the Noh play "Ataka" and its kabuki adaptation "Kanjincho," it depicts Yoshitsune and Benkei's party crossing the "Ataka Barrier" under an arrest order from Minamoto no Yoritomo. Kurosawa creates a chatty strongman to accompany the seven members of Yoshitsune's entourage, fully utilizing Enoken's character. The contrast between Denjiro Okouchi’s Benkei and Enoken’s strongman produces remarkable effects, making this film extraordinary. Enoken’s lightness highlights the tragic nature of those who are doomed. The emotional display of Benkei drunk at the end and the tears shown by the strongman left alone upon waking create a richly poetic narrative.
