One morning, Zatoichi was suddenly attacked by thugs. He killed one and severed the arm of another. Frustrated with such bloody journeys, Zatoichi visited his former teacher, Hikonoichi, who had taught him acupressure, and his daughter, O-Sayo, at the Asou inn. However, Hikonoichi had been killed, and O-Sayo had become a courtesan named Nishiki due to the local leader, Tatsu Gorou. Surprised, Zatoichi went to the Teiji Building where O-Sayo was. However, she was imprisoned in a storehouse after being severely beaten by the coroner Isoda Kouemon, following his orders. Sneaking into the storehouse, Zatoichi heard the details of the incident from O-Sayo. -- Hikonoichi had set off for Kyoto with 300 ryo to obtain the highest rank in acupressure, the Kenkou position. However, he was murdered along the way and robbed of his gold. Furthermore, Tatsu Gorou used the 100 ryo he had "kindly" lent as leverage and made O-Sayo a courtesan at the Teiji Building -- That night, Zatoichi was summoned by Tatsu Gorou's bodyguard, Gunjuurou, who introduced himself and asked him to massage his shoulders. Seizing the opportunity, Zatoichi interrogated Gunjuurou about Tatsu Gorou’s actions. However, when the conversation turned to Hikonoichi’s murder, Gunjuurou fell silent. Another bodyguard, Kadokura Kohei, who was secretly watching Zatoichi, sensed danger. Around that time, the local government started an audit of the accounts during an inspection round. Kadokura seized 100 ryo from Isoda, fearing exposure of their wrongdoing, and killed a pursuing inspector in order to confront Zatoichi alone. Yet, Kadokura crumbled before Zatoichi’s lethal sword. Nevertheless, Zatoichi returned to the inn only to be surrounded by the authorities on charges of murdering the inspector. It was Tatsu Gorou and Isoda's scheme. In a predicament after being robbed of his cane by Gunjuurou’s daughter, Otsuru, Zatoichi found himself in a crisis. But just in the nick of time, Gunjuurou, who was impressed by Zatoichi’s righteousness, took back the cane from Otsuru and handed it to Zatoichi. With a howl, Zatoichi unleashed his deadly two-step cut, staining both Tatsu Gorou and Isoda in red.
