In June 1944, as World War II neared its end, the island of Saipan in the South Seas faced its most brutal moment. 70,000 American troops landed on the small island, overwhelming the Japanese defenses. With defeat inevitable, Japanese officers ordered all military personnel and civilians on the island to "die honorably" for the Emperor, turning the beautiful Saipan into a river of blood. Captain Sadao Oba (played by Yu Tokunow) of the 18th Infantry Regiment led 2,000 soldiers in a suicidal attack against the Americans, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. Oba miraculously survived and encountered other remnants of forces, including Kimasu Hosono (played by Tomohiro Kanasawa) and Toshio Kitani (played by Takayuki Yamada). At this moment, the belief in "survival" occupied Oba's heart, and he decided to protect the surviving military and civilians until the war's end... This film is adapted from Don Jones's nonfiction novel "Oba, the Last Samurai: Saipan 1944-45," based on the true historical events of Saipan during World War II.
