The story is based on the life of Wallis Simpson, and this is Madonna's second film directed after "Filth and Wisdom" in 2008. The production cost was largely funded by herself, with a total investment of $36 million. The film employs a dual narrative structure: one storyline chronicles the legendary romance between King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and American woman Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), where Edward, in the name of love, causes Wallis to bear the brunt of public scorn for her entire life. The other storyline takes place in 1998, where a New York woman named Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) becomes obsessed with Wallis and Edward's love story while facing emotional abuse from her husband. She collects all information about Wallis and visits exhibitions of Wallis's auction items repeatedly. After several visits, she encounters a security guard there (Oscar Isaac), reigniting her long-lost passion.
