Wan Li (played by Edward G. Robinson) is a highly respected university professor with extensive knowledge. In a local club, there hangs a portrait of a beautiful woman, and Wan Li, like other men, is deeply captivated by her. One day, while standing in front of the portrait, lost in thought, he is startled to find the woman from the painting, Alice (played by Joan Bennett), standing right in front of him. Invited by Alice, Wan Li visits her home, where they open a bottle of wine to spend a romantic evening together. However, at that critical moment, Alice's boyfriend bursts in and confronts Wan Li in a fit of rage. In the ensuing struggle, Wan Li accidentally kills Alice's boyfriend, and the events of that night ruin Wan Li's life.
