The land of Anatolia is filled with spirituality, yet the conflicts among people add to its melancholy. The old father worries that the forest filled with poplar trees will be confiscated by the government, and his earnest eyes carry the spring atmosphere that falls between the leaves. The son returns to his hometown to find subjects for a film, calling on friends and relatives to act, determined to capture nature in the frames. His nine-year-old nephew carries a chicken egg, hoping to keep it safe for forty days, so that his father will feel at ease buying him a musical watch. Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan reminisces about his last trip home while shooting "Small Town Years," recounting some touching little stories and capturing the passionate, undercurrents of ordinary faces (his parents play the roles of the protagonists in the film). The breath of the lens and the gaze of the heart sync beautifully, rivaling Iran's Kiarostami, and it has won a total of seventeen awards both domestically and internationally.
