Struggling comic Rudy Ray Moore (played by Oscar-nominated actor Eddie Murphy) suddenly has a flash of inspiration after a series of failures in his entertainment career, stepping onto the stage in another persona and becoming a sensation. Drawing from the street myths of 1970s Los Angeles, Moore transforms into “Dolemite,” a pimp with a cane and a master of dirty jokes. However, his ambitions extend beyond just selling pirated records deemed too pornographic for mainstream radio. Moore persuades a socially conscious playwright (played by Keegan-Michael Key) to write a movie for his alter ego, which incorporates kung fu, car chases, and Lady Reed (played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph), a former backup singer who ultimately becomes his unexpected comedic sidekick. Despite clashes with arrogant director DeWayne Mardis (played by Wesley Snipes) and countless production hurdles in a rundown studio at the Dunbar Hotel, Moore’s Dolemite ultimately achieves massive commercial success and becomes an iconic film of the blaxploitation era. Over the past few decades, Moore's groundbreaking influence has been celebrated by comedians and rappers alike, and My Name is Dolemite serves as a humorous tribute to the extraordinary genius who created his own legend. Directed by Craig Brewer (Dolemite Is My Name, Empire State); written by Emmy and Golden Globe winners Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson); produced by Oscar and Golden Globe nominee John Davis (The Bull, Joy) along with Golden Globe nominee John Fox (Joy) and Murphy; the film features an all-star supporting cast, including Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Snoop Dogg, Ron Cephas Jones, Barry Shabaka Henley, T.I., Lionel, Tasha Smith, and Oscar winner Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther) as the costume designer.
