The story takes place in the UK in 2003, where Katherine (played by Keira Knightley) is a government communications translator serving the British intelligence agency. One day, she receives an encrypted email revealing a conspiracy between the NSA and the UK government to invade Iraq and start a war. Katherine leads a stable life that many envy, with a substantial salary and a promising future. The email puts her in a moral quandary: should she turn a blind eye or bravely step forward to expose the truth? Ultimately, her sense of justice triumphs over personal interests, and Katherine teams up with lawyer Ben (played by Ralph Fiennes) to make the email public, quickly sparking public outrage. Soon after, Katherine is charged with treason for violating the Official Secrets Act.
