A new batch of interns who have just graduated from the police academy have been assigned to the police station, and Wang Lianguo's mentor is Yang Guoli, a "beat cop" who has worked for seven years. Yang Guoli introduces Xiao Wang to the neighborhood committee, where the elderly ladies eagerly explain to him the responsibilities of managing a section, which should be based on household registration management and focused on public security work. One night, while Yang Guoli is on the night shift, someone gets bitten by a dog. It's said that a black dog had crazily lunged at pedestrians; could it be rabid? Yang Guoli immediately reports to the station chief, who decisively decides to organize personnel to quickly find the stray dog to prevent it from injuring other people. The police officers each hold wooden sticks and search for the dog, finally finding it in an abandoned yard. They chase it into the street and beat it to death. It is sent to the epidemic prevention station for inspection, and indeed, it is a rabid dog. The epidemic prevention station warns the police station: rabies has a 100% mortality rate, and preventive measures must be taken for the police officers involved in the dog culling. To ensure the safety of residents, the police station requires the officers to investigate whether there are any more rabid dogs, and to promote the dangers of rabies and the necessity of a city-wide ban on keeping dogs to the residents. The station chief assigns Yang Guoli to primarily oversee this temporary dog eradication effort. Yang Guoli often works overtime and rarely has a Sunday off to spend a day at home playing with his three-year-old son. His wife often complains that the work at the police station is too hard. Yang Guoli is constantly working overtime, and all household chores and child-rearing depend on her. Despite her grievances, she still busies herself with household duties when he returns home. On this day, it was time for household registration management training, and the on-duty officer calls Yang Guoli out of the meeting room, saying they've caught a farmer from outside gambling in a public place. The farmer vehemently denies gambling. Yang Guoli asks him to play a hand of cards in front of him, and the farmer dazzles Yang Guoli with his skills. Observing the situation, Yang Guoli calmly questions him, cleverly exposing his lie until the gambler finally admits to being a habitual gambler. It’s Yang Guoli's turn to be on night duty again, after handling daily tasks during the day and checking on dogs at night, he is utterly exhausted after several sleepless nights. His area has a new incident: a young man from outside is following a woman and acting lewdly, so he rushes to handle it. After returning from the scene, without catching his breath, Wang Lianguo calls with an urgent situation: while checking on dog owners, he encountered a difficult individual, Wang Xiaer, who refuses to admit to keeping a dog and won't allow police to enter for inspection. Yang Guoli takes people to bring him to the police station for education, but unexpectedly, he refuses to accept criticism and speaks rudely. Yang Guoli, unable to tolerate it, strikes him. The station holds a meeting to criticize him, proposing "strict law enforcement" and "enhancing legal awareness" in preparation for new tasks. The work of the police is often tedious, mundane, yet indispensable.
