Keshav (played by Akshay Kumar), a middle-aged single man running a bicycle shop, faces the authoritarian demands of his father, who, due to superstition, insists that he must marry a woman with two thumbs on one hand. To mark a supposedly auspicious date, Keshav is also arranged to marry a cow. Although Keshav goes along with it, he is always hopeful for true love. By chance, he meets a well-educated woman from a Brahmin background, Jaya (played by Bhumi Pednekar). After initial misunderstandings and conflicts, this couple, who come from vastly different social statuses and backgrounds, grow closer and eventually marry. However, their happiness is short-lived as Jaya discovers a major issue the day after their wedding. Due to religious beliefs, Keshav's family has no toilet, and everyone, including women, must go far into the wilderness to relieve themselves. To fight for her rights, Jaya engages in a long-standing battle with her husband and his family...
