Lu Wenting (played by Pan Hong), an ophthalmologist at a hospital in Beijing, suffers a myocardial infarction due to long-term work pressure and is in critical condition. Having devoted her most valuable years to treating patients with eye diseases, Lu Wenting is now reaching middle age. Although she is a senior ophthalmologist, she still works as a resident doctor earning only a few dozen yuan, living with her family of four in a cramped 12-square-meter apartment, leading a financially strained life. The burden of family life falls on her husband, Fu Jiajie (played by Da Shichang), while she has no time to care for her son, Yuanyuan (played by Zheng Yi), and daughter, Jiajia (played by Cao Xue), which causes her to be unable to take Jiajia to the hospital even when she has a fever. The pressure of work and the weight of life overwhelm her. On the morning of her collapse, she had performed surgeries on three patients in a row.
