The hero Hangdao (Xu Jinjiang), the famous swordmaster Mingjian (Lin Qingxia), and the laughing third master (Andy Lau) are three renowned martial arts experts of the Jianghu, but due to differing aspirations, they take separate paths. Hangdao dedicates himself to the court, while Mingjian and the laughing third master agree to duel for the title of the world's best. Laughing Third Master is falsely accused by a traitor in his gang of sneaking into the palace to assassinate the empress and steal a precious sword, and he is pursued by the misled Hangdao and the four elite guards. In order to clear his name, Laughing Third Master begins a journey with the sympathizer Butterfly Dance to evade capture and uncover the truth. After enduring countless hardships, Laughing Third Master eventually discovers that Mingjian's sister-in-law Caiyi, to maintain Mingjian's title as the world's best, relies on her unique martial arts skills and uses the ploy of faking death with the help of the "Famous Flower" leader Yan Dunhuang, to clash with the court, Hangdao, and him. After her scheme fails, Caiyi, who secretly loves Mingjian, takes her own life, yet before dying, she still worries about the duel between Mingjian and Laughing Third Master.
