The film is directed by renowned photographer and documentary filmmaker Jiao Bo, whose previous works "My Dad and My Mom" and the series "Kissing Spring - My Earthquake Orphans" have made a significant impact on Chinese society, especially the "My Dad and My Mom" series that has touched countless children. This time, in "China in the Countryside," Jiao Bo turns his camera to his hometown in Zibo, Shandong, but instead focuses not on the village where he was born, but on Shaoyu Village in the revolutionary old district of Yimeng Mountain in Yiyuan County. The film uses a small village as a starting point to showcase the tremendous changes in rural China, environmental protection, and the spiritual and material pursuits of farmers, addressing many social realities in a way that is both vivid and profound. In an interview, Jiao Bo revealed that he and his crew spent a total of 373 days filming this documentary in Shaoyu Village: "There are 167 households in the village, and we became the 168th after we arrived." Except for Jiao Bo, who is nearly 60 years old, the average age of the other four main creators is just over 20: "So our film not only presents the social realities of rural China but also does so from the perspective of young people, and I believe it will resonate with the youth." During the 373 days, the "China in the Countryside" production team lived and ate with the local villagers, becoming a family, and recorded nearly 1,000 hours of footage, ultimately editing it down to about two hours of highlights. Jin Yue, who has directed the CCTV Spring Festival Gala multiple times, believes that "China in the Countryside" vividly presents the joys and sorrows, family relationships, and folk customs of individual Chinese farmers, with distinctive and lively characters, a tension-filled structure, complex stories, clear narratives, simple visuals, and smooth editing, making it "an invaluable specimen of rural life in China that holds significance for this era."
