In the 1930s Shanghai, at Shunhe Cotton Mill, female worker Su Fen (played by Bai Yang) happily marries women's tutoring school teacher Zhang Zhongliang (played by Tao Jin). On July 7, 1937, Su Fen gives birth to a son. Shortly after naming him Kang Sheng, Zhongliang joins the rescue team and leaves Shanghai, cleverly surviving the Nanjing Massacre. In 1938, Zhongliang's mother (played by Wu Yin) brings Su Fen and Kang Sheng back to their rural hometown in Danyang. However, the countryside is also unstable; Zhongliang's brother Zhongmin (played by Gao Zheng) refuses to be a collaborator and takes to the mountains as a guerrilla. In 1940, the invaders hang Zhongliang's father. Su Fen has no choice but to carry her child and return to Shanghai with her mother-in-law, struggling to survive with her longing and hope for Zhongliang amidst the suffering. In 1941, after being captured and successfully escaping, Zhongliang makes his way to Chongqing, where he can only rely on an old acquaintance, Wang Lizhen (played by Shu Xiuwen), and gradually becomes tempted by a depraved material life, starting to lose himself. In 1945, after Japan's surrender, Zhongliang and Lizhen return to Shanghai one after the other, moving into the home of Lizhen's cousin He Wenyin (played by Shangguan Yun Zhu). Just as Zhongliang is becoming involved with Wenyin, in desperation, Su Fen fortuitously ends up being recruited to work as a maid in Wenyin's house…
