In the time of the Roman Empire, Marcellus (played by Richard Burton) serves as a tribune. The Roman authorities accuse Jesus Christ of spreading falsehoods, capturing and condemning him, with plans to crucify him. Assigned by his superiors, Marcellus is responsible for overseeing and carrying out this task. In a gamble, Marcellus wins a red robe that Jesus once wore. Subsequently, he finds himself haunted by nightmares and illusions every night as if under a curse. However, prompted by a divine call, Marcellus discovers that the source of the fear induced by the robe is actually within himself. Ultimately, Marcellus chooses to heed the voice of his heart, following the God within him, even if it means facing death without hesitation. This film won the Best Motion Picture - Drama at the 11th Golden Globe Awards in 1954 and received two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction (Color) and Best Costume Design (Color), along with nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography.
