After returning from the battlefield to his homeland, Masayuki Tsurugi (played by Masayuki Mori) comes to Tokyo in search of his childhood sweetheart, Michiko (played by Kuga Yoshiko). With no money to his name, he lives in a humble apartment with his brother A-Yang (played by Dosan Shigezo), who runs a secondhand book business, barely making ends meet on his brother's income. One day, Tsurugi unexpectedly meets his military academy classmate, Naoto Yamaji (played by Shigekichi Uno), who makes a living writing letters in English and French for a group of unfortunate women who were once in love with foreign soldiers and are now left behind in Japan after their lovers returned home. Tsurugi, not wanting to burden his brother, accepts Naoto's invitation to help the women in the Suzuran area write their letters. One day, he encounters Michiko, who turns out to be one of these suffering women…
