In the spring of Showa 19, a frail and somewhat stuttering young man, Go-kuchi Wataru (played by Ichikawa Raizō), arrives at Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto with a letter from his father (played by Hamamura Jun) to visit his father's late friend, Taniyama Dōken (played by Nakamura Ganjiro). As the head monk, Taniyama, touched by his deceased friend’s kindness, sincerely takes in this helpless young man. Go-kuchi, remembering his father's high praise for Kinkaku-ji, thoroughly appreciates the temple's ethereal beauty. However, the unbearable realities around him, particularly the distasteful tourists tarnishing the temple, and even the once-revered monk, lead to his deep disappointment. To preserve the sanctity of Kinkaku-ji, he would rather see it consumed by flames... This film is adapted from Yukio Mishima's original work “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion” and won three awards at the 1959 Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Actor (Ichikawa Raizō), Best Supporting Actor (Nakamura Ganjiro), and Best Cinematography; Best Actor at the 1959 Kinema Junpo; and Best Supporting Actor at the 1959 Daily Cinema Awards.
