In German-occupied Poland, a young generation has grown up. Stach is one of them, initially engaging in dangerous resistance activities spontaneously with his friends, largely unorganized and aimless. Later, under the guidance of a kind-hearted Communist official, he connects with an underground organization. When he sees the brave and beautiful young leader Dorota, he joins in and falls in love with her. Stach then immerses himself in the dangerous activities of resisting oppression and humiliation, maturing when he has to take responsibility for the lives of others. Unfortunately, Dorota is arrested, and Stach is heartbroken. Meanwhile, the underground resistance organization recruits new members, and a new generation is rising.
