During World War II, the German Nazis brought the flames of war into Czech territory, resulting in widespread chaos. However, in a small rural train station in the Czech Republic, there lived a group of carefree, indifferent optimists. The obsequious station master Max (played by Vladimír Valenta), the womanizing Hubička (Josef Somr), the female station attendant Zdenka (Vlastimil Brodský) who dreams of frolicking with Hubička, and the shy trainee Míra (Václav Neckár). Thanks to them, the dreary countryside station is filled with laughter and joy. Míra is in love with the female conductor Masa (Jitka Scoffin), but in the midst of their happiness, he discovers that he is impotent! This robs Míra of the will to live… The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968.
