Maurice Purley (Timothy Spall) is an outstanding photographer. His wife Monica encourages him to host a party for his cleaning lady niece Roxanne in celebration of her 21st birthday, as Roxanne's mother Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn) is short on money. Thus, brother Maurice is willing to lend a hand to his sister. During the preparations for the birthday party, Cynthia receives a mysterious phone call from a Black woman named Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). Through their conversation, she learns that Hortense is an optician living in London and that her mother has just passed away. After meeting, Hortense reveals her background to Cynthia, which directly impacts Roxanne's birthday party... The film won the Palme d'Or at the 49th Cannes Film Festival, with Brenda Blethyn winning the Best Actress award.
