At the beginning of the war, the introverted young soldier Franz discovers an injured fox cub. The sight of the lonely little fox in the woods reminds him of his own childhood when his father sold him to a farmer. He takes care of it like his own child and brings it to occupied France. As he raises the fox, the past that Franz has been avoiding slowly catches up to him. He is caught in a deep dilemma of whether to continue avoiding these painful memories or to face them.
