In a coastal town in Japan's Tohoku region, a well-off family, the Saigos, visit the fishing family, the Hinguchis, regarding their daughter Chikako's (played by Akisa Kuroki) marriage. Despite the significant differences in their social status, seeing the mutual affection between the young couple leads both families to agree to the engagement. However, just five days later, the world is shocked by the outbreak of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11. The Saigo family survives the disaster, but three members of the Hinguchi family perish, including Chikako's fiancé, the eldest son Shuichi (played by Daisuke Watanabe). After this, Chikako's father brings Shuichi's grandfather (played by Koji Hashizume), father Katsumi (played by Toshirō Yanagiba), and brother Mitsuhiko (played by Ryunosuke Kamiki) back to their home, but to prevent Chikako from bearing too much sorrow, the three generations choose to leave.
