Middle-aged man Takuro Yamashita (played by Koji Yakusho) stabs his wife to death in a fit of rage after witnessing her cheating on him. He is imprisoned and after eight years, he is released on parole. He opens a small barbershop by the Tone River in Chiba Prefecture. Due to his past experiences, he finds it hard to trust people, and his only regular interaction is with the eel he keeps. After inadvertently saving the suicidal Keiko (Misa Shimizu), she stays to work at the barbershop to repay him and brings in many customers with her cheerful personality, gradually bringing sunshine back into his life. After Takuro's former cellmate Takasaki is released from prison, he comes to the Tone River area to work in waste collection. To disrupt Takuro's peaceful life, he begins to expose Takuro's "shameful acts." At the same time, Keiko's former lover, Dojima, arrives to take her and her money away. Knowing that any conflict could lead him back to prison, Takuro bravely takes action to protect Keiko.
