This film is an epic multi-part widescreen giant produced by the Soviet Union to commemorate the great victory of the Soviet people in their anti-fascist struggle during World War II. The film is divided into two parts: "Invasion" and "Typhoon Offensive," with four episodes in total. In June 1941, fascist Germany concentrated 190 divisions to invade the Soviet Union using blitzkrieg tactics. Due to lack of preparation, the Soviet Union suffered initial defeats, and the German army advanced on Moscow, leading to a life-and-death battle. The film was shot over two years with a cost of approximately six million rubles. It features grand and spectacular scenes, involving about 5,000 soldiers, nearly 10,000 civilians, 250 actors, and 202 cinematographers. Like several other similar war films directed by the same director, this grand war film was made with strong political intent under the support of the former Soviet government. The film’s promotion of justice triumphing over aggression is still seen as valid today; however, some scenes glorifying national leaders clearly serve a political need. Excluding these political factors, the portrayal of the macro war scenes remains outstanding.
