Lorna (played by Arta Donbroshi) obtains legal residency in Belgium through a marriage for immigration. Her biggest dream with her Albanian boyfriend Sokol (played by Alban Ukaj), who works across Europe to earn money, is to save enough to open a bar together. Clumsy drug addict Claudio (played by Jérémie Renier) marries Lorna to help her gain Belgian residency, and he also receives money from the intermediary, Fabio (played by Fabrizio Rongione). While Fabio plots to kill Claudio with an overdose of drugs, he and Lorna prepare to use the same method to make a Russian man a Belgian citizen. During her time living with Claudio, Lorna surprisingly develops warm feelings for him, and she decides to divorce Claudio as soon as possible to save him from death. Claudio dies of a drug overdose, and Lorna proceeds with the original plan quite smoothly, but she soon realizes she is pregnant, and she tells Fabio that the father of the child is Claudio. At the 61st Cannes Film Festival in 2008, the Dardenne brothers won the Best Screenplay award in the main competition for this film.
