In Northeastern Manchuria, the defeated soldiers, including Kaji, fled south. They encountered men, women, and children escaping along the way, and although they helped them, one by one, they succumbed to hunger and fatigue. Kaji endured many hardships and arrived at a pioneering village where Japanese elders and women still remained. He prepared to fight the Soviet army there, but after a Japanese woman shouted, “Don’t fight here!” they began a life in a prisoner reception center. Kaji harbored a deep hatred for the despicable Tokiwa in the center. Afterward, he was falsely accused and punished with hard labor. After enduring hard labor in the forest, he returned to the center. Upon learning that the weak soldier he had protected was killed by Tokiwa without punishment, Kaji fell into despair. He killed Tokiwa and then escaped from the center. He wandered in the snowy wasteland, murmuring about the beauty of his wife, gradually becoming frozen.
