The film is adapted from the original work by Hwang Hee-young and is the last work of Lee Wan-hee before his death. Renowned director Ha Gyeong-joong commented, "This film is an immortal masterpiece that encapsulates the essence of Korean cinematic thought, on the verge of ushering in an opportunity for domestic film reform, though unfortunately not executed sufficiently. However, I appreciate the mysterious aura it emanates." This statement reflects the film's significant position in Korean cinema history. It is a precious early road movie in Korea, particularly rare in its depiction of warmth amidst the cold indifference of modernization. The characters and the colors harmonized against the vast snowy plains prevent "The Fairy Road to Seonpo" from becoming an ordinary mediocre work, while also compensating for the unfortunate atmosphere of shoddy productions in Korean filmmaking at the time. The strong contrast brought by experimentalism and modernity, along with the clash between tradition and trends, cannot deny the unusual emotional impact that Lee Wan-hee's profound outlook on life brings to the audience. Lee Wan-hee fell ill in the studio while working on the film's post-production editing and, after being sent to the hospital, passed away. Therefore, crew members disclosed: "He probably realized that this might be his last film, so despite not looking well, he was energetic every day during filming, almost doing everything himself," which showcases the dedication poured into the film.
