Robert (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is a young doctor in England in 1660, a time when the profession is revered and elevated to a near-divine status. Invited by Charles II (played by Sam Neill), Robert decides to abandon further study in medicine to become a royal physician at the palace. To add to this, Charles II arranges for Robert to marry Celia (played by Polly Walker), who has no feelings for him. However, she ultimately succumbs to this political marriage. In the palace, Robert meets the court painter Fain (played by Hugh Grant), a passionate man who encourages Robert to pursue what he truly desires. Robert discovers that he is deeply in love with Celia.
