Unhappily married Turkish woman Umay (played by Sibel Kekilli) not only has no love left for her husband, but she also frequently suffers from domestic violence at his hands. The tragic marriage drives Umay to escape back to her family home in Germany with her son. However, her tragic fate does not end there; instead of finding a warm, supportive home, she is met with her family's cold ridicule. For the sake of reputation, her family even persuades her to follow traditional customs and send her son back to be raised by her husband in Turkey. Faced with her family's disdain and scorn, kind-hearted and forgiving Umay does not give up; she insists on raising her son and is reluctantly staying with friends. However, this is only the prelude to tragedy, as Umay goes to visit her dying father, only to find herself facing the barrel of her brother's gun. This film not only won the European Audience Award at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in 2010 but also received six nominations, including the European Film Award and the German Film Award, winning three main awards.
