Larry (Jason Robards) is a very temperamental old man who owns a 1,000-acre Iowa estate, pouring his life's work into this land, where he reigns as the undisputed king. Larry has three daughters: the eldest, Rose (Michelle Pfeiffer), lives on the farm with her husband and two daughters; she is suffering from breast cancer and firmly believes she will recover. The second daughter, Ginny (Jessica Lange), also lives here with her husband and takes on much of the work on the farm. The youngest daughter, Caroline (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is a lawyer. When Larry begins to consider issues of farm inheritance, conflicts arise, and many long-hidden secrets gradually come to light.
