In an ordinary household, the family is holding the seventh anniversary memorial for the deceased head of the family, Saburo. His lifelong friends, Kanamori Soichi (played by Noboru Sato), Taguchi Hidemitsu (played by Noboru Nakamura), and Hirayama Seiichiro (played by Ryuuji Kita), arrive as scheduled, reminiscing about the past with a deep sense of nostalgia. The widow, Akiko (played by Setsuko Hara), is raising her daughter, Fumiko (played by Yoshiko Kuga), on her own. Now that her daughter has reached a marriageable age, Akiko enlists the help of Kanamori and others to find a suitable match for Fumiko.
